The estimated 200,000 people who attend tonight's Light Up Night Downtown can enjoy fireworks and free entertainment but will find shopping options thinner than in past years. Mainstays remain: Macy's, Saks Fifth Avenue, Brooks Brothers, Larrimor's. But the city's central business area, like much of the region, has lost merchants since the recession took hold last year.

Mainstays remain: Macy's, Saks Fifth Avenue, Brooks Brothers, Larrimor's. But the city's central business area, like much of the region, has lost merchants since the recession took hold last year.  

A recent crop of television-inspired clothing and jewelry items are playing off our desire to do just that. For those who want to dress like one of the 1960s fat cats from AMC's "Mad Men," Brooks Brothers just released a suit for you. Inspired by the show, the gray suit features a slim fit, a sharkskin print, and details particular to the era.  

A chill in the air. Bing Crosby music at the mall. And the first blizzard.  

What do Mad Men , Hannah Montana , Sex And The City and Austin Powers have in common? They're all projects with highly recognizable costume design — and the clothes have made the jump to retail. Awesome… unless you're most costume designers.

Because Janie Bryant is getting personal acclaim right now, other studios might see the opportunity to make money. Studios have forgotten that they could be developing household names for their costume designers.   -Cameron Silver

There are few things more influential than entertainment, and the ability for characters (and the celebs who portray them) to drive retail consumption and inform pop culture. Every generation has spawned a myriad of fads from Farah Fawcett's feathered bangs to Jennifer Aniston's signature 'Rachel' haircut to iPods, mobile apps, the vampire craze and Ashton Kutcher's popularization of Twitter. Even Mad Men's 60s style has infiltrated the Gap and Banana Republic, along with Brooks Brothers' limited edition
